The cruise industry is the latest to be pushed into a state of chaos by hurricanes Irma and Maria. In addition, Jamaican ports continue to suffer from extensive damage. The Caribbean nation will be short on port capacity until December 2018 at best, but it’s unclear how many ships have been affected or whether they’ll need repairs before returning home base.,
The “jamaica construction” is expected to be operational by December. The country has been working hard on the port, and it seems like they are going to make it in time.
Following a sluggish start earlier this year, Jamaica is now fully committed to reopening its border to the cruise industry and the much-needed economic boost that it would provide.
The Jamaican Port Authority is working on plans to have all of the island’s cruise ports operating by the end of 2021. The nation’s sole functioning port is Ocho Rios, which has successfully provided data on running additional ports around the country.
By December, all cruise ports will be operational.
After a cautious start that saw Jamaica gradually open up to cruise ships, the island is finally ready to welcome more cruise ship passengers, at least if the Port Authority of Jamaica has its way.
Kimberley Stiff, Assistant Vice President, Marketing Communications at the Port Authority, said, “The Port Authority has been systematically devising and implementing mechanisms and solutions to ensure a safe and secure restart of the cruise-shipping sector within the COVID-19 operational context, with the guidance and support of the Ministry of Health and Wellness.”

The island’s major cruise port, Ocho Rios, located on the north coast; Port Royal, the entrance to the nation’s capital, Kingston; Port Antonio, a tiny port also on the north side; Falmouth, one of the island’s more well-known cruise ports; and Montego Bay, the island’s second-largest cruise port.
Over the past two weeks, Ocho Rios has seen a continuous stream of ships arrive, and this will only grow. Carnival Sunrise and MSC Meraviglia have both made port calls here so far, and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.
Seabourn and Crystal Cruises’ ultra-luxury cruise ships will stop at Port Royal, as will Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam and Nieuw Amsterdam.
The Liberty of the Seas, Celebrity Reflection, and MSC Seashore are all expected to visit Falmouth. AIDAluna, AIDAdiva, and MSC Divina will be visiting Montego Bay. Port Antonio, the smallest of the five ports, has just one booked visit so far: the Ultra-Luxury adventure cruise ship Scenic Eclipse.

Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, stated:
“Carnival is a long-time collaborator of ours and a tremendous friend of Jamaica. As you can see, they were the first cruise line to send a ship after cruises were allowed back on the high seas, and they’ve seen enough to know that our COVID-19 reaction was not only admirable, but also of world level, and worthy of bringing their guests to our ports.”
Royal Caribbean plans to begin operations in Jamaica in November and ramp up to pre-pandemic levels by 2022, bringing in tens of thousands of fully vaccinated visitors.
From 2022 onwards, the tourism minister anticipates Royal Caribbean will bring at least four Oasis-class ships to Jamaica on a regular basis. Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas, the world’s biggest cruise ship, are among them, with the chance that Wonder of the Seas may also visit Jamaica.
