American Airlines (AAL) has vowed to pay the $4,000 price for a drone food delivery, but it is unclear whether it will be paid by AAL or the Afghan government, as the company is not able to establish a connection to Afghanistan.

Last week several US airlines, including American Airlines, Kennedy Airways, and United, cancelled flights to Afghanistan, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The problem? A shortage of pilots to fly the planes.

For Hundreds Of Afghan Refugees Stuck On A Plane, American Airlines Orders Pizza

Many Afghans were evacuated as fast as possible on military aircraft, with little concern for documentation. Visas may have been in the works at the US embassy in Kabul, and papers burned to prevent the Taliban from obtaining them — a reasonable security precaution – but the US later gave the Taliban with a list of Americans and Afghan friends it wanted to evacuate.

Refugees were transported from Kabul to military facilities in Qatar and Germany, and then to Washington Dulles on charter flights paid for by US airlines under the Civil Reserve Air Fleet program. Before boarding a flight, each passenger is screened, and then they must go through immigration again in the United States.

However, without papers, there have been massive bureaucratic delays at Washington Dulles, with passengers having to wait 8-12 hours to board flights. Flight attendants have been advised to bring their own water and prepare for potentially hazardous circumstances.

American Airlines is touting their extensive expertise diverting planes to Washington Dulles and managing irregular operations there, which seems strange.

As a sister airport to American’s hub at Reagan National Airport (DCA), IAD is often used to divert planes during bad weather, which is why the airline’s staff there has established a reputation for handling unusual operations and situations.

Employees from BWI and Washington National were also called in, and they ended up buying pizza for at least one of the aircraft that had been stranded on the tarmac for hours.

In addition to the usual responsibilities of running a safe and successful flight, American’s IAD team demonstrated its ability to deliver on the spot by arranging a pizza run to feed hundreds of passengers on one of the rescue planes, as well as the crew members who were looking after them.

“You heard him shout into the back, ‘Y’all, we’ve got a huge one!’” Camille informed her colleagues about her phone conversation with the pizza shop. ‘American Airlines!’

Now the issue is, who will be assigned to the lie-flat business class seats and who will be sent to coach?
