WHY IT RATES: It is an international non-profit organization. The Flight Safety Foundation has urged aviation industry participants and governments across the globe to expedite the creation of an internationally recognized digital technology that allows passengers to quickly demonstrate evidence of vaccination status, test findings, or past recovery from COVID-19. — Associate Writer Laurie Baratti

The Flight Safety Foundation today urged the aviation industry, regulators, and health authorities across the globe to speed up the creation of standardized and globally recognized digital health certificates so that they can be extensively used within the next 12 months.

“Commercial aviation has begun the long, slow climb out of the travel trough created by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Foundation President and CEO Dr. Hassan. “However, even the most routine international trip is fraught with confusion and frustration about acceptable documentation, testing requirements, and the specter of quarantines, let alone the risk of fake COVID test results or vaccine status fraud.” “To optimize passenger health safety, we need a secure, internationally acknowledged digital platform that allows passengers to upload and carry with them their vaccination status, recent test results, or COVID-19 recovery status,” he added.

What’s Hot Right Now

Despite the fact that dozens of airlines and nations have implemented digital health certificates and applications, acceptance has been sluggish and inconsistent. As travel increases, the Foundation is worried that airlines, security staff, and immigration and border control officers may be confronted with an overwhelming number of testing and vaccination papers to handle.

“If all stakeholders pull together and prioritize development and adoption of these tools, the industry will be able to move forward safely and in a manner that instills confidence in travelers, aviation industry personnel, regulators, and health authorities,” said Capt. Conor Nolan, chair of the Foundation’s Board of Governors. “We need solutions that are scalable, interoperable, and guarantee the security of sensitive data.”

The Foundation has posted “Guidance on Advancing COVID-19 Risk Mitigation in Air Travel” on its website, which contains suggestions for protecting passenger health safety while flying. The Foundation’s Medical Advisory Committee provided input towards the development of the guideline material.
