Marriott International has released its 2018 Corporate Responsibility Report which details the company’s progress in environmental, social and governance. The report includes information on water stewardship, recycling, energy efficiency and more.

Marriott International has published its 2021 Serve 360 Report, which details the company’s progress toward its sustainability and social impact goals for 2025.
The objectives were developed with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind, with the aim of empowering local communities, establishing more sustainable practices for both associates and visitors, and fostering safe and inclusive working environments and accommodations for everyone.

The effect of 2020 on these objectives is outlined in the 2021 Serve 260 Report. For the last eight years, the company has received high marks from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for its dedication to being a great place to work for women, people of color, and people with disabilities. It was also named one of America’s Most Responsible Companies by Newsweek and was listed on the 2021 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index. It also placed first on DiversityInc’s 2020 Top 50 Companies for Diversity list, received a perfect score on the Disability Equality Index, and was listed on the 2021 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index.
The report’s objectives are divided into four areas. The company’s objectives of improving the areas where its hotels are situated via volunteering and other activities are included in the Nurture Our World category. During the pandemic, the company fell short of its annual volunteer hours target. The company, on the other hand, became one of the largest corporate blood donors for the American Red Cross, holding over 500 blood drives and donating more than 14,000 units of blood.

Sustain Responsible Operations is the second category, which covers activities such as decreasing water and energy usage, investing in renewable energy, minimizing waste, and other efforts.
For the time being, Marriott’s aim of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2025 is on track, with a decrease of 32% since 2016, owing in part to the lack of occupancy during the epidemic this year. Marriott is on track to meet its target of investing in 250 adaptive reuse hotel projects, in which it converts an existing building or hotel into a hotel. It has already built 184 adaptive reuse hotels since 2016.
It is behind schedule in achieving its objective of having all of its hotels accredited to a recognized sustainability standard, with just 32 percent of its property being certified sustainable. The corporation’s second objective, to source 30% of its energy usage from renewable resources, is the least accomplished thus far, with just 0.8 percent of its energy coming from renewable sources.
The Empower Through Opportunity category is the third. Marriott has worked with a number of charitable organizations to assist people from underserved communities, veterans, people of color and disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, refugees, and others join Marriott’s workforce.
So far, all of its objectives in this category have been met. By 2025, the company wants to spend $35 million in developing hospitality skills in at-risk and disadvantaged areas; it has already spent $8 million since 2016.
Its objective of having a gender-balanced leadership team has been pushed to 2023, with women accounting for 44 percent of its worldwide executives. Finally, the company’s objective of having 25% of its executives of color by 2025 has been almost achieved, with 20.5 percent of executives of color by the end of 2020.
The organization’s last objective area, Welcome All and Advance Human Rights, focuses on problems such as identifying and combating human trafficking, as well as forming long-term relationships with NGOs and including human rights criteria into building contracts. So far, the company has met all of its objectives, with 825,000 of its employees educated to identify and react to human trafficking and 91 contracts including human rights criteria.
“While we, like the rest of the globe, remain focused on pandemic response and recovery, we also recognize that we must remain consistent in our larger commitment to Serve Our World, especially in terms of reducing our environmental impacts,” said Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International.

As we advance on our sustainability and social impact journeys, we remain committed to aligning our strategy with current climate science and having a good effect in the communities where we operate,” Capuano said.
