Hyatt is changing their award pricing for peak and off-peak travel times. This new policy will impact on many members of the industry, but it may be a valuable move to help make Hyatt more cost-effective.

For reward nights booked beginning Tuesday, October 26th for stays March 1, 2022 and beyond, Hyatt is changing its award chart to establish peak and off peak pricing in each category.
On the general, the difference between peak and off-peak award price is a devaluation, but there will be certain hotel stays that are less expensive at certain periods that a member wishes to redeem for. Simply said, hotel chains pay a lot more money to their properties when they are almost or completely sold out, and they want to charge more points for such nights. When they are confident that a hotel will be vacant, on the other hand, the reimbursement rate to hotels is considerably lower, and they may charge less points.
This (even more) revenue-based change is negative for members since it implies that members will receive average value for their points regardless of the time of day, rather than having as much of a chance to earn outsized value. Normally,
- It makes sense to schedule a paid stay when hotels are vacant and prices are low.
- When hotels are full and prices are expensive, booking a points stay makes sense.
As a consequence, you may use the currency that makes the most sense and receive more value from each. Peak and off-peak hours decrease the worth of your account’s restricted amount of points.
Depending on the category, peak price will range from 1500 to 5000 points. Off-peak price will be a 1500-5000 point reduction. The following is the new free night award chart that will take effect in July 2021:
Cash and points rewards are 50 percent points and 50 percent the current cash rate, thus on off-peak and peak days, cash and points will see lower and higher points values. Club redemptions, regular suite redemptions, and premium suite redemptions will all have peak and off-peak periods for cash and points, as well as free night rewards. Off-peak and peak reductions and upcharges are the same for Regency Club and Standard Suite rewards as they are for Free Night Awards.
Every other hotel chain that has done so has had its points devalued as a result. Marriott is particularly obnoxious, with vacant rooms charging peak rates throughout shoulder and off seasons. Though the evidence will be accessible beginning next Tuesday, I trust Hyatt to handle this more rationally.
Certificates for a Free Night Are Unaffected
Importantly, unlike Marriott and IHG, certificates eligible for free nights aren’t dependent on the amount of points a free night costs, so even during busy times, these free nights get you into the category they’re good for. As a result of this adjustment, Hyatt free night rewards may become even more valuable.

- Every year, after 30 elite qualifying nights, members get a free night in category 1-4.

- After staying at 5 Hyatt brands for the first time, members get a free night in category 1-4.
I have to commend Hyatt for not taking advantage of its members’ free night rewards in the manner that some other hotel companies have.
Although There Has Been A Devaluation, Hyatt Is Still Better
For a particular night at a Marriott hotel, redemption price will not change often. “Redemption prices for free nights will be published as soon as nights are available for bookings (typically 13 months in advance),” according to Hyatt. In addition, a new calendar will be available to assist visualize days when variable pricing applies.
Finally, if members have current awards for future travel and the night of their booking switches to off-peak on October 26, they will get an immediate reimbursement of the points difference without having to verify availability or rebook.
At the end of the day, the value proposition of a hotel program is a package. Hyatt is the best at treating me and providing me with the greatest access to the loveliest accommodations at excellent hotels. And with the devaluation of every other program, they have opportunity to do the same.
They’re pushing the notion of staying in city hotels for less points during the holidays when they’re vacant and Chicago is cold, in Dubai during the sweltering summer, and at sky locations when there’s no snow. This is not a good situation. However, Hyatt’s program continues to outperform Hilton, Marriott, and IHG.
