World Health Organization Issues Travel Alert Due To New Omicron Variant

The World Health Organization has issued a travel advisory over the spread of Omicron to countries outside of Brazil, which is where it’s believed the source was first identified. The virus does not have symptoms but can cause serious health complications such as meningitis and encephalitis for those infected.

The “does the government require you to stay home for 14 days after traveling” is a question that has been circulating among travelers. The World Health Organization issued a travel alert due to an Omicron variant.

Due to the Omicron version of COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a new travel recommendation on November 30, advising adults over 60 and those with specific health problems to postpone their travel plans in the near future.

On November 30, the WHO updated its international travel guidance, adding a statement stating that those who are unvaccinated, elderly, or at risk of severe COVID-19 problems should postpone their trip.

“Persons who are ill, have not been fully vaccinated, or do not have proof of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and are at increased risk of developing severe disease and dying, including people 60 years of age or older, or those with comorbidities that increase the risk of severe COVID-19 (e.g. heart disease, cancer, and diabetes), should be advised to postpone travel to areas with community transmission,” the WHO’s amended statement stated.

The WHO also cautioned against imposing a travel restriction, stating, “Blanket travel bans would not prevent the worldwide spread of the disease, and they will impose a severe impact on lives and livelihoods.” Furthermore, they have the potential to undermine global health efforts during a pandemic by discouraging nations from reporting and sharing epidemiological and sequencing data.”

The Omicron variation, found on November 24, 2021, is the most recent COVID-19 variant to get extensive notice throughout the world, requiring immediate travel prohibitions between southern Africa, its origin area, and the rest of the world.

It’s too early to say how far the Omicron variation has spread; researchers are sequencing local populations’ test results for the variant all around the world. Others are attempting to determine how effective our licensed vaccinations are against the variation, while others are investigating how this variant varies from the others.

“It may not be as bad as Delta. It’s possible that there’s a silver lining… With this version, the clinical condition may be milder “In an interview with NBC Bay Area, Dr. George Rutherford, a professor at UCSF’s School of Medicine, noted.

However, safeguards are being taken all across the globe right now. The United Kingdom updated its admission procedures on November 30, requiring all overseas tourists to undergo COVID-19 exams and self-isolation. A story released the same day said that the Biden administration was considering tightening entrance criteria for overseas tourists, including instituting a mandatory quarantine time and retesting procedures.
